Fundations Time!

Today we are going to continue tapping out and reading words with the MAGIC "e." Remember that the Magic "e" hops over a consonant and makes the VOWEL say its NAME. Then the "e" is quiet at the end of the word because it used all of its magic on the vowel. If there is no Magic "e," then you can just stretch out the short vowel sound.

I have had so much fun reading Fairy Tales with you all!

Today to celebrate the end of this reading unit, enjoy one of our favorite characters, PETE the CAT as he goes on a Magical Adventure!

1) Read along with "Pete the Cat: Sir Pete the Brave." Notice all of the magical parts of this story.

You having been working very hard on different math skills all year long. Try your best to complete this end of year math assessment on your own. Parents, you may help your child by reading or explaining directions for the assessment but please allow your child to come up with answers on his or her own. Good Luck!

Hello Friends!

We are getting ready for our End of Year "SNAP WORD" challenge. You have been working very hard all year on reading sight words. These are the words that you just need to KNOW in a SNAP. We have learned more than 200 sight words this year and now Ms.K is going to check in with you to see how many of these words you can read on your own.

Ms.K will be scheduling ONE-on-ONE meetings to check in with each of you separately.

**While you are waiting for your meeting with Ms.K, please review sight words lists A to H.**

1) Watch Ms.K's review videos to practice saying sight words aloud and looking closely at different word parts hiding inside of some snap words.

2) Look at each sight word list on your own and practice reading and saying snap words aloud.

**Take your time reviewing and practicing each sight word list. There are 200 words so please make sure that you take breaks between each list to make sure that you are focused.**

**Also remember that each of you is different, so please start reviewing sight words with a list where you feel confident and comfortable on your own and you can move onward from there. Do not worry if you do not remember every single word or if a list gets too hard! Ms.K will be taking notes so that we know which words you can keep on practicing next year.** :)

Our IMMUNE SYSTEM helps to protect our bodies from germs, but sometimes strong viruses can attack our immune system, leaving it easy for us to get sick. We can lower the chances of this happening by carrying out HEALTHY PRACTICES to prevent the spread of germs.

We have been working hard all year on stretching out VOWEL sounds (a, e, i, o, u).

Today we are going to learn that sometimes when vowels are combined with other letters the VOWEL says its NAME.

We are going to practice tapping out words where the letter "a" says its name. When you see words with "ai" and "ay" the letter "a" gets bossy and it says its NAME.

1) Watch the alphablocks videos to see how the letter "a" says its name in "ai" and "ay" words.

2) Watch Ms.K's lesson to practice tapping out words with "ai" and "ay." Sing along with Ms.K to find these words in her Silly Song. Clap when you find a word with "ai" or "ay."

3) Use the LETTER TILES to find all of the words that have "ai" and "ay" in the song. Build these words with the LETTER TILES.

Today we are going to continue reading FAIRY TALES together.

Remember that fairy tales are fiction stories that include magical elements and characters such as talking animals, princesses, princes, and magical kingdoms.

Today we are going to learn more about the CHARACTERS in a Fairy tale by paying attention to what is happening and how the characters are FEELING. We are going to practice reading with EXPRESSION by changing our VOICES to match how the characters are FEELING.

1)Watch Ms.K's Read Aloud of "Little Red Riding Hood." Watch how Ms.K changes her voice to sound the way LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD is feeling and how the WOLF is feeling.

2) Enjoy the story of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" on Epic. Think about the characters in this story and how they are feeling. Think about how you can change your VOICE to match how they are feeling while you are reading along with the story.

Today we are going to continue reading and tapping out words with PIRATE LETTERS (ar, or, er, ir, ur.) These sounds are called "R-Controlled Vowels" because whenever the letter "r" follows a vowel it changes the vowel sound.

2) Review Ms.K's PIRATE SONG video to practice finding words with r-controlled vowels. Clap when you see words that have "ir" and "ur."

Wow! You are all did an amazing job on the "CHA CHA CHALLENGE" yesterday.

Now we are going to bring back the "Workout with Books" Challenge. This is going to be fun!

**We are going to use BOOKS to complete different exercises for our workout today. Normally we use books to workout our minds, but today we are going to use books to workout our bodies!!**

**You will need 2 BOOKS for our workout. If you don't have 2 books, you can grab 2 items that are about the same size for our workout.**

1) Watch Ms.K's first exercise video to do the following workouts:

-jumping jacks
-side crunches
-wall sits

**Drink some water.**

2) Watch Ms.K's second exercise video to do the following workouts with books:

3. Make sure you are not dropping your hips or hiking your body up high toward the ceiling, you should look like a straight line.
4. Position your head so that your neck is in a neutral position and your gaze is on your hands.

Science Time!

Today we are going to carry out some super fun Science Experiments!

What does a Scientist do?

I scientist OBSERVES, ASKS QUESTIONS, WONDERS, and EXPERIMENTS.

Today we are going to be Scientists. Follow these steps to carry out our science activities.

1) Warm Up with "Scientist K." Watch video 1 to think about what happens when different colors react with each other.

2) Follow the SCIENTIFIC METHOD. Watch video 2 and 3 to see what happens when we drop different amounts of MENTOS Mints into SODA bottles.

3) Draw and label a picture to show what you observed during this experiment and turn it in with this assignment. *Turn in your picture with our assignment.*

4) Try the experiment on your own! All you need is a bottle of soda and mentos mints.

5) Watch Ms.K's "Role Reversal" Video to see how she transformed into a scientist. This was SO funny.

**Take a picture or video of yourself doing the experiment and turn it in with this assignment! Have fun! REMEMBER that if you do not have your mentos mints and soda today, you can always try the experiment another day! :)

Today we will practice building our reading FLUENCY. This means that we will practice reading with a SMOOTH voice and we will practice paying attention to what is HAPPENING in a story.

Good readers REREAD to build fluency. Today we will reread "The Pink Dress" together.

**Please take out your white board or a blank piece of paper so that you can follow along with Ms.K. Separate your white board or paper into 3 parts: Character, Setting, Main Event.

1) Watch Ms.K read the story with a smooth voice.

2) Practice reading the story with Ms.K. Repeat each part after Ms.K reads it so that you can read with a smooth voice.

3) Think about what is happening in the story. Draw and label the CHARACTERS, SETTING, and MAIN EVENT to retell what is happening.

4) Find someone in your house to read "The Pink Dress" aloud too. When you are done reading with a smooth voice, retell the story to them and tell them who the characters are, where the setting is, and what the main event is.

**Take a picture of your work and turn it in with this assignment.**

You have been working very hard on adding DOUBLE DIGIT numbers by putting together TENS and ONES.

Today we are going to COMPARE double digit numbers by looking at TENS and ONES.

To COMPARE double digit numbers you will need to draw a picture to show how many TENS and ONES are in each double digit number. Then you will start by looking at how many groups of TENS each number has. The number that has more TENS is the bigger number. When we find the bigger number in math we call this the GREATER number.

Show that you found the GREATER number by circling the double digit number that has MORE groups of TENS.

3) Practice comparing double digit numbers and finding the GREATER number on your own.

First compare 42 and 35.

Plank Cues:
1. Rest your forearms on the floor, with your elbows directly underneath your shoulders and hands facing forward so that your arms are parallel.

3. Make sure you are not dropping your hips or hiking your body up high toward the ceiling, you should look like a straight line.

A BLEND is formed when 2 consonants join together but you can still hear 2 sounds.

**Sometimes a BLEND will join with a CONSONANT and this is called a DIGRAPH BLEND. Today we will look and listen for words that have DIGRAPH BLENDS.**

Today we will learn something NEW. We will learn about DIGRAPH BLENDS which are formed when a DIGRAPH is next to a consonant in a word. The digraph and the consonant join together to make a DIGRAPH BLEND.

We have a CHRYSALIS update!!

Over the weekend our chrysalises were very active and the butterflies were getting ready to come out of their chrysalises!!

Watch the video below to see how the chrysalises move. Also watch as Ms.K and her sister move the chrysalises into the butterfly habitat. We had to be very careful as we moved the chrysalises, but this was a very important step because the butterflies need more room to move around when they come out of the chrysalises.

You can also read, "Caterpillar to Butterfly" to start thinking about the LIFE CYCLE of a butterfly. Tomorrow we will use this information to create our own drawing of a Butterfly's Life Cycle.

Reading Time!

Today we are going to continue reading NONFICTION books. Remember that NONFICTION is REAL!

Sometimes when we read nonfiction books there are long, tricky words in our books. Today we are going to practice using a reading strategy to help us read tricky words. WE will practice breaking up tricky words by looking at ALL of the PARTS.

1) Watch Ms.K's lesson to practice reading tricky words by looking at ALL of the PARTS. Think about the word parts that we have practiced during fundations. Ask yourself, "Do ALL of the letters LOOK RIGHT?"

2) Enjoy Ms.K's nonfiction read aloud, "Leopards."

3) Practice Reading on your own. Read "Snow Leopards."

Today we are going on an ADVENTURE to the DEEP BLUE SEA.

First we will go on a treasure hunt! "Pirate K" has found a treasure map that will help us find words with the "ar" sound.

Follow the map and sing the PIRATE RIDDLE with "Pirate K" to find words with "ar."

1) Read the song and tap out words with "ar."

2) Sing the song with a smooth voice. Clap when you find words with "ar."

3) Sing the song on your own. Perform the song for someone in your family. Don't forget to clap when you find words with "ar."

4) Use the LETTER TILES to build words with "ar" that you found in the song.

Today we will read "The Pink Dress Together."

1) Listen to Ms. K read the story aloud. Watch as Ms.K scoops up words to read with a SMOOTH voice.

2) Look for PUNCTUATION marks with Ms.K.

3) Repeat after Ms.K as she reads the story. Read with EXPRESSION and change your voice when you see different punctuation marks.

4) VISUALIZE what is happening in the story. Take our your white board or a blank piece of paper. Draw and label pictures that match the story. Think about the characters, setting, and main event when you are drawing your picture.

5) Read this story aloud to someone in your family. Practice reading with a SMOOTH voice and with EXPRESSION.

Yesterday we learned about KEY WORDS. Key words are important words that teach us more about a TOPIC.

Today we will continue to learn about BLENDS. We will practice tapping out words that have BLENDS. A BLEND is formed when two letters join together but both sounds can still be heard. When we tap out words with blends, we tap each letter of the word separately to show that you can hear 2 sounds.

Today we will also review digraphs. Digraphs form when 2 letters join together to make 1 new sound (wh, ch, sh, th, ck).

When we are tapping out words today we will notice that some words have BLENDS and DIGRAPHS. We will look for these word parts to help us read and spell.

Today we will practice learning MORE about a TOPIC by looking for KEY WORDS in our nonfiction books. KEY WORDS are important words that POP OUT on the page and that can teach us something about a TOPIC. Some KEY WORDS are different colors than the other words on the page. This is how you know they are important words to know. Sometimes you can figure out what a KEY WORD means by looking at the picture and thinking about what is happening.

Follow along with Ms.K and look for KEY WORDS as she reads, "Amazing Animals: Llamas."

Practice looking for KEY WORDS on your own as you read, "Sheep." Go on a scavenger hunt and make a list of the KEY WORDS that you find.

Today we will reread the "Butterflies" book. When you are done with a book, you don't just get rid of it. Strong readers go back and reread to remember all of the important facts that they learned.

After we reread we are going to practice RETELLING what we learned about the TOPIC by putting the facts that we learned on our fingers. Get your fingers ready and follow along with Ms.K.

Now its time to practice on your own! Read "Ants: World of Insects" by Emily K. Green. When you are done reading practice RETELLING 5 things that you learned about the TOPIC on your FINGERS.

**After reading "Ants: World of Insects" show your work by recording a video of your 5 finger retell on our "Nonfiction Readers" FLIPGRID. If you cannot access flipgrid, you can write down 5 things that you learned and post a picture of your sentences with this assignment.**

It's CATERPILLAR time!

My sister and I have had so much fun observing the caterpillars and we hope that you are having fun too!

Our caterpillars are eating a lot and they are getting even bigger. They are growing and changing a little bit everyday and today it looks like they have more white hair on their bodies. They look longer and they have white stripes on the sides of their bodies.

Today we will continue reading NONFICTION books. Remember that nonfiction is REAL. This means that you will be gathering facts and information about real things.

Yesterday we learned that you can start learning about a TOPIC by looking at the picture on the COVER of your book. Today we will learn that you can find out even MORE about a topic by looking closely at the PHOTOS on each page. Nonfiction books are special because they have photos that can show you close-up details about a topic.

Next read "National Geographic Readers: Spiders." Practice looking closely at the photos on each page to learn more about the topic. Talk about this nonfiction book with someone in your family. As you are reading, think about these questions:

1) What is the topic?
2) What are 3 things that you learned about the topic?

Today we will continue to learn about BLENDS. We will practice tapping out words that have BLENDS. A BLEND is formed when two letters join together but both sounds can still be heard. When we tap out words with blends, we tap each letter of the word separately to show that you can hear 2 sounds.

Watch BOTH of Ms.K's videos to practice tapping out words with blends. The second video will show Ms.K writing the sentence with a darker marker so that you can check your sentence with mine clearly.

I have been having so much fun OBSERVING our caterpillars and they have been changing a lot!

Look at how our caterpillars are growing. They have been eating so much. Did you notice how the caterpillars are getting longer and a little bit wider? It looks like they have white fuzz all over their bodies now. WOW!

Today we will focus on all of these changes. View the video below to observe the changes with your own eyes.

**Look at Ms.K's special video so that you can practice drawing our caterpillars from observation. Draw a picture of OUR caterpillars and include all of the changes that you have noticed. Today we are going to review how to ADD groups of 10 to Double Digit Numbers that are made up of some TENS and some ONES left over.

Try adding groups of TEN to DOUBLE DIGIT numbers by solving the math problems in GOOGLE SLIDES. Build the double digit numbers by dragging TENS and ONES. Count up the TENS and the ONES to find the SUM. Look at Ms. K's example for help.

Today we will begin our NONFICTION reading unit. When we read nonfiction books that means that we are reading to learn about something that is REAL.

Today we will start learning about NONFICTION TOPICS by looking at the COVER and making a PREDICTION. TOPIC is a fancy word for the thing that you will be reading and learning about. When you look at the cover of a nonfiction book, you can start learning about the TOPIC by looking a the picture and reading the title.

Then you can make a PREDICTION by using the sentence starter:

I predict the book will be about ___________________________________.

Remember that a prediction is a guess! Use the picture and the title to guess what the book will be about.

Hi friends!

Today I wrote a silly song for you so that we can practice the -ea vowel team together.

When two vowels are next to each other in a word, the first vowel says its name and the second vowel does not make a sound. To help you remember this you can repeat, "When 2 vowels go walking, the first one does the talking."

Today we ill practice tapping out words that have -ea and that have the long e sound. This means that the letter e is saying its name.

Sing the song with Ms.K and follow these steps:

1) Ms. K breaks up words with -ea. You can join in.
2) Reread with Ms. K with a smooth voice. Clap when you see a word with -ea.
3) Reread on your own and clap when you see a word with -ea. Ms. K will point to the words and clap with you.
4) Find someone in your family to sing the -ea song to. Perform the song for them and clap when you see -ea words.

**Look for -ea words in our song. Use the LETTER TILES to build the -ea words that you find. Take a picture of the words that you built and submit with this assignment.**

Reading time!

Today we are going to look closely at PUNCTUATION marks in our books. Strong readers change their voices when they notice the different punctuation marks at the end of a sentence. Today we will read with EXPRESSION by looking at the punctuation marks at the end of a sentence.

First you will watch Ms. K as she reads, "The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!" by Mo Willems. Notice how Ms.K changes her voice when she sees different punctuation marks.

Writing Time!

This is the last week of our Realistic Fiction Writing unit and I am so proud of how hard you have all been working on your stories!

Today we are going to work on building our WRITING STAMINA. This means that we will be working on writing more and more and we will try to finish a story in just ONE DAY!

Remember to include everything that we have worked on throughout this unit in your story. Include your character, setting, problem, and solution. Also make your character come to LIFE by making them MOVE, TALK, and have FEELINGS. Add lots of details too.

This is our last week of Realistic Fiction Writing so let's see if we can make it the BEST story yet!

Reading Time!

You are all doing an amazing job of bringing characters to life by reading with EXPRESSION. Yesterday many of you told me that you enjoyed reading with EXPRESSION with one of our favorite Piggie and Gerald books.

Today we are going to read a new Piggie and Gerald book called, "Watch Me Throw the Ball!" by Mo Willems. Watch Ms.K read with expression by changing her voice to match how the characters are feeling.

After the read aloud, try reading, "Watch Me Throw the Ball" on your own. Practice reading the book with EXPRESSION with someone in your family. One person can do Piggie's voice and someone else can do Gerald's voice. Remember to look at the characters' faces to think about how they are feeling.

We have been learning about PERSEVERANCE!

Sometimes when you start something new things can feel challenging and you can start to feel frustrated. This is when you might feel like you want to quit. Everyone goes through challenging times that might make them want to give up. This is called "THE DIP." When you start to feel like you want to give up it is important to keep thinking positively and to have perseverance! Keep working hard and don't give up!

We learned that we can get out of "THE DIP" by stopping to FOCUS and REFLECT. You can stop and reflect by looking at your work and thinking really hard about how to make it better.

This week we are going to be REUSING everyday objects from around our homes to inspire our artwork! To get ROLLING we will be collecting toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls to create different characters and animals called Reusable Rascals 😋🐶 🐱 🐙 🦉

Today when we get to the end of a book we will think about the LIFE LESSON that the book is teaching us. A LIFE LESSON is something that you can learn from your book and practice in your own life!

Read along with Ms.K as I read, "Too Many Carrots," by Katy Hudson. When we get to the end of the book we will find the LIFE LESSON by thinking about the PROBLEM and how the problem got SOLVED. Then we will ask ourselves, "What did the character realize when the problem got solved?" This is the LIFE LESSON.

Practice sharing what you learned from this book by using the sentence starter:

After reading the story we will retell the story by discussing the characters, setting, and main event.

Start by watching the mini lesson. We will focus on reading with EXPRESSION by changing our voices when we see fancy words that POP OUT at us on the page. When you read with EXPRESSION this means that you are reading with FEELING. Watch as Ms.K changes her voice when she sees words that POP out on the page.

Today you will continue building DOUBLE DIGIT numbers by counting how many groups of TEN are in a number and how many ONES are left over.

Start by building the DOUBLE DIGIT numbers that are posted in Google Slides under your assignments. Please show how many TENS and ONES are in each double digit number by dragging them to the TENS place or the ONES place. Please make sure that you "turn in" your work.

Next we will do Fundations Storytime. Last week we read "King Sam" and we practiced tapping out words and reading the story with a smooth voice. Today we will work on being FLUENT readers. We will REREAD the story with a SMOOTH voice and pay attention to what is happening in the story. When we are finished reading the story, we will show that we know what is happening in the story by RETELLING who the characters are, where the setting is, and what the main event is.

**Please take out your white board or a blank piece of paper. You can divide it into 3 sections so that you can practice drawing and labeling the CHARACTERS, SETTING, and MAIN EVENT with Ms.K. Look at Ms. K's board if you need to see an example of how to get your white board or blank piece of paper ready.**

Practice rereading and retelling the story to someone in your family.

When you are finished reading the story, look for words that have GLUED SOUNDS in this story. Use the LETTER TILES to build these words.

On Friday we went on a virtual field trip to the Zoo and we learned all about Koalas. Today you are going to learn how to draw a Koala by following a step-by-step video.

Remember to relax and take your time while you are drawing. If you make a mistake, don't give up. Artists have PERSEVERANCE. If things start to feel frustrating, you can stop and reflect by looking at your work and thinking really hard about how to make it better.

Last week we started learning about PERSEVERANCE!

When you start something new things can feel very exciting in the beginning. However, along the way things can get more challenging and you might start to feel frustrated. This is when you might feel like you want to quit. Everyone goes through challenging times that might make them want to give up. This is called "THE DIP." When you start to feel like you want to give up it is important to keep thinking positively and to have perseverance! Keep working hard and don't give up!

Today we are going to learn how to get out of "THE DIP" by stopping to FOCUS and REFLECT. You can stop and reflect by looking at your work and thinking really hard about how to make it better.

Today we are going to focus on understanding what is HAPPENING in our books. Sometimes when we are reading, we get to a word that we do not know. Today we will STOP and THINK about what words mean so that we can keep track of what is happening.

**Try your best to spell on your own without asking for help! Independent writers try their best to write down the sounds that they hear. Your spelling does not have to be perfect, you just need to try your hardest!**

You have been working so hard on making your characters come to LIFE by making them MOVE, TALK, and have FEELINGS! I want you to continue to do that today as you write page 2 of your realistic fiction story. Use the word SUDDENLY to write your problem page.

Today we are going to focus on SPELLING. If you get stuck and you do not know how to spell a word I want you to think about what we have practiced during fundations. You can spell words by saying the word SLOWLY and TAPPING OUT the sounds that you hear.

If you get stuck, try your hardest to spell on your own and write down the sounds that YOU hear. When we get stuck we do not want to ask someone to spell the word for us because then we are not learning how to do it on our own. Try your best! You do not need to spell your words perfectly because we are still learning how to spell.

You have been doing a great job with TEEN Numbers and now you know that a TEEN number is made up of one group of TEN and some ONES left over.

Today we will practice building bigger DOUBLE DIGIT numbers that have more than one TEN. You will build DOUBLE DIGIT numbers by looking at how many groups of TEN there are and how many ONES are left over. Give it a try! We will practice this more in depth with Ms. K tomorrow! :)

Today we are going to practice reading with EXPRESSION! This means that we will change our voices to read with FEELING. We will practice reading with expression by changing our voices when we see words in our books that POP OUT at us. Sometimes words on the page look a little different than the other words on the page. Sometimes words are bigger, smaller, darker, or fancier.

Listen to Ms. K read chapter 2 of , "Mr. Putter and Tabby Feed the Fish." Notice how Ms. K changes her voice when she sees words that POP OUT.

Read "The Day Dad Joined My Soccer Team," by Maureen Fergus. Look for words that POP OUT at you and practice reading with expression by changing your voice when you see these words.

Practice tapping out words in the -it family as you read, "Can It Fit."
