How to do a PLANK:🏋️‍♀️
1. Rest your forearms on the floor, with your elbows directly underneath your shoulders and hands facing forward so that your arms are parallel.
2. Extend your legs out behind you and rest your toes on the floor. Your body should form one straight line from your shoulders to your heels.
3. Make sure you are not dropping your hips or hiking your body up high toward the ceiling, you should look like a straight line.
4. Position your head so that your neck is in a neutral position and your gaze is on your hands.
Hold this position.

"Art is too important not to share" - Romero Britto

This week we will be using our art to give THANKS to the people who have made learning from home possible. We will design special hearts inspired by self taught, contemporary artist, Romero Britto.

Brazilian-born and Miami-made, Romero Britto has created a "visual language of Love, hope, and happiness" His main goal when people see his artwork is to make them smile. When Britto was just your age, he began teaching himself how to make art by drawing on newspaper, cardboard and anything else he could find laying around......now Romero Britto inspires people around the world! Let's see how we can use bright colors, patterns, lines, and designs to create hearts for all the people who have helped us during this journey at home. We want to show healthcare workers, parents, teachers, brothers, sisters, family members and anyone else who has worked so hard to keep us healthy, safe, and engaged in learning how much we APPRECIATE THEM:)

Romero Britto is an Art Activist (a person who takes action to create CHANGE). When Covid19 hit, he began creating artwork for hospitals to show nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers how much he cares and believes in them. To learn more about how and why Romero Britto makes his artwork, watch the attached video!

Step 1: Design your Thank you HEARTS. (Watch Ms.K's sister's tutorial for help getting started)
Be sure to include bright colors, patterns, lines, & Designs!

Step 2: Write the words THANKS or Thank You somewhere in your artwork! (Think about healthcare workers, parents, teachers, brothers and sisters, family members and anyone else you would like to thank)

To finish up our science and health lessons, we are going to talk about what we can do to FEEL BETTER when we are sick.

When you are sick, there are a few things you can do that will help you feel better!

We can:
1) REST
2) DRINK A LOT OF WATER/FLUIDS
3) GO TO THE DOCTOR
4) TAKE MEDICINE (with a parent or guardian)

It is important that a parent, guardian, doctor, or nurse HELP US when we are sick. Sometimes we may need medicine to help us get better, but sometimes we don't! We should never take medicine on our own, so remember to always ask a parent for help if you feel sick, and I promise they will know what to do!

Long U is a little tricky because it can make TWO sounds!

Say the following word: mute
Did you hear yourself say the letter U as you said m-u-te? In this word, U is saying its name (like we've been talking about!)

Now, say the word: rude
In the word 'rude' you dont hear the U so clearly. Instead, you hear the sound "ew"

BOTH these sounds are considered the LONG U sound!

Today, we are going to review long vowel sounds. This can get tricky - because vowels have TWO sounds!


Remember the long vowel sound, says the vowels NAME.

For example, i - bike - /ī/, do you notice how in the word bike, you actually hear yourself say "i"

Another example would be a - cake - /ā/, do you hear yourself say "a" when you say cake?

After I read, I want you to think about:

2) Who mad magic powers?
3) Were they good or evil?

Remember, the magic e makes the vowel say ITS NAME!

For example - in nAmE - the magic e skips over the m to make A say the long vowel sound /ā/ - its name.
So the only sounds you hear in name are /n/ /ā/ /m/

We can also say the e is SILENT (because we don't hear the e sound at all!)

For fundations this week, we are going to be learning MAGIC E!

Magic E is when the letter e comes at the end of the word! The magic e is SILENT (so we don't hear it's name) but it still has a VERY important job!

The magic e makes the vowel in the word say its name (the long vowel sound!)

For example - in the word HOP (o says the short sound o - octopus - /o/) but in the word HOPE (the e at the end makes the o say the long sound (o says it's name - O)

Yesterday, we learned how to compare objects by deciding which object was the longest, and which was the shortest.

Today - we are going to continue comparing objects - but today we are going to use a third object to help us! Yesterday, the objects we were comparing were lined up above or below one another - that made it EASY to compare the lengths!
Today, the objects we want to compare won't be lined up above and below each other - so we have to use something to help us!

I want you to know that I am thinking of each and every one of you more than ever over the last few days. My heart is with you and your families, and I am sending all my love and best wishes your way!

I wish we were together in the classroom, but even through remote learning, I am still here to listen, and to talk. Even though it may look a little different, I am and always will be here for YOU!

Today, we will be taking a pause. We will take a pause from our school work, so that we can check in with each other. We discussed yesterday during our science lesson - that an important key to staying healthy is expressing and talking about our feelings.

I will be sharing read alouds today with all of you, one of which is called I Am Human by Susan Verde and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds - found on Epic.

I love you all, and I appreciate the hard work and continued support in our classroom community!

We ALSO are going to start learning about the suffixes ED and ING! Remember, a suffix comes at the end of a word - and changes the meaning of the word a little bit!

-ed means that something happened already (in the past)
-ing means that something is happening right now!

Today, I want you to read the following the book on Epic, Squirrels.

As you read, I want you to remember and think about everything we have learned so far about NONFICTION.

1) Examine the cover - what do you learn about the topic before you start reading?
2) Retell some facts you learned by using FIVE fingers to help you!
3) Look for KEY WORDS to learn even more (usually bold or a different color)
4) Use the text features to help you (maps, diagrams, labeled pictures, headings, and the glossary!)

Today for FUNDations, we are going to learn about CLOSED SYLLABLES. A closed syllable has ONE vowel, and its cloed in by 1 or 2 consonants behind it.

When you have a CLOSED SYLLABLE - the vowel has the SHORT sound.

Remember - vowels make TWO sounds, the short sound (a - apple - /a/)
OR the long sound (the vowel says its name)

Today we are going to make a Star Person! You will need:
1) Red, blue, and a white piece of paper. (If you don't have colored paper, you can use white and color in your stars red and blue!!)
2) Pencil
3) Scissors (make sure an adult is around to help! Remember how scissor safety rules!)
4) Glue
5) Markers or crayons

We are going to use PLACE VALUE and PLACE VALUE BLOCKS to help us!

This is tricky - so please watch my video and really try hard to pay attention! We will be doing this for a few days - so if you are confused, that's okay!

Last week we learned about blends in the beginning of words! This week we will learn that blends can be at the beginning, OR at the end of a word!

Take out your whiteboard or a piece of paper and pencil - and write down the words you see if the Introduction to Ending Blends video! Mark up the words by underling each letter in the blend!

(Remember - when marking up a blend - you underline each letter SEPARATELY so you should have two lines instead of one!)

Hi guys! As you know - all of our caterpillars had made their chrysalides last week!

Today - I transferred the chrysalides from the cup into the butterfly garden - so that when they come out as butterflies - they have more room to breathe, fly, and eat!

I uploaded pictures and a video below as I was transferring them so you can get a closer look at a chrysalis!

Check out the video - Do you notice two of the Chrysalides are shaking? A chrysalis will shake like that if it feels threatened to scare off predators. Since I was moving them, they sensed danger and wanted to protect themselves! Isn't that amazing?

For your assignment today - I want you to draw a picture of this stage in the life cycle! Show me your drawings!

I know it's catch up day - but I still want to go over our tally marks and place value chart, because today is an important day! It is the 10th day of April - and that means we have double digits for the first time this month!!

All you have to do is watch the video to see me write the date, make 10 Tally Marks, and fill in my place value chart! (Our place value chart will have something new! A tens rod! Yay! No need to submit any work - just “turn in” after you watch the video!

Skip counting!

Sometimes, learning how to skip count can help us with math, or even counting faster. For example, we are working on place value and tally marks each morning. Place value charts can help us count quickly - by skip counting by 10s. We can skip count by 5's with tally marks, to help us count faster also!

Today, you are going to listen to a read aloud - about an exclamation point! Remember, we use exclamation marks to show when we are excited about something, or to show when we are saying something with a lot of feeling and emotion behind it. For example, if you were at a baseball game, and your favorite player hit a home run, you wouldn't just say "oh look, a home run." You would probably say something like "Oh! Look! He hit a home run!" Because you would be excited and joyful.

As you are listening to the book, I want you to think about 3 things:
1) How does the exclamation mark feel in the beginning?
2) What types of things does the QUESTION MARK say?
3) How does the exclamation mark feel at the end?

After the read aloud, answer the questions!

Then, complete the worksheet, making all the words you can!

I also attached the unit 6 trick words - study and read these words!

Our reading lesson today is similar to yesterday! Good readers read the words in a story, but also examine the pictures to find out more information the words didn't tell us!

Listen to my read aloud, then I'll stop, and you guys will be detectives - look at the words and the picture on the page and see if you can answer the questions on the worksheet!

I added a picture of the page - incase you need to look back after listening to and watching the video!

Yesterday, we worked on addition word problems - today we'll do subtraction!

Remember, when you answer word problems, you need to include a label! I did the first one for you!

Hi guys! If you have your FUNdations journal - you will need it for writing today. If not, paper and pencil is great!

For writing today you are going to write about TWO things you did over the weekend, and WHY you enjoyed doing that! Adding reasons to our writing is SUPER important. Check out the pictures attached to see the sentence starters I modeled for you. I also shared my writing piece as well!

Notice how my sentences START with a CAPITAL LETTER. They END with a PUNCTUATION MARK. And - there's spaces between my words (we don't want mashed potato sentences - where our words are all mashed together)! This is how good writers organize their writing. I can't wait to see your writing!

Don't forget to draw and LABEL a picture!
